Wladimir Wladimirowitsch, russischer Politiker, * Leningrad (heute Sankt Petersburg) 7. 10. 1952; Jurist; wirkte 1975-91 im KGB (Abteilung für Auslandsspionage, 1985-90 in der DDR tätig), 1994-96 Erster stellvertretender Oberbürgermeister von Sankt Petersburg, arbeitete ab 1996 im Verwaltungsapparat von Präsident B. N. Jelzin in Moskau, war ab 1997 Leiter der präsidialen Kontrollverwaltung. 1998 wurde er Chef des russischen Inlandsgeheimdienstes FSB, im März 1999 Sekretär des Sicherheitsrates und im August 1999 Ministerpräsident (bis Mai 2000). Unter ihm kam es 1999/2000 zu einer neuen Militärintervention in Tschetschenien. Nach dem Rücktritt Jelzins am 31. 12. 1999 übernahm Putin interimistisch das Amt des Staatspräsidenten. Am 25. 1. 2000 wurde er Vorsitzender des Rats der Staatsoberhäupter der GUS. Die Präsidentschaftswahlen am 26. 3. 2000 konnte er als Exponent eines starken Staates bereits im ersten Wahlgang für sich entscheiden (offizieller Amtsantritt am 7. 5. 2000; Russland, Geschichte).
